Newman house of discernment.
A house of prayer, formation, brotherhood, and service for men of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe to discern a vocation.
What is the Newman House of Discernment?
The Newman House of Discernment is a house where men live together to discern their vocation through prayer, formation, brotherhood, and service.
Founded in August 2025, the House of Discernment at the St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish & Newman Center exists to help young men listen closely to the voice of God and courageously respond to His call. As part of the vibrant sacramental and intellectual life of the Newman Center, the House provides a structured, supportive environment for those exploring the possibility of priesthood or seeking deeper clarity about God’s plan for their lives.
Today, the House welcomes seven Discerners, each committed to growing in holiness through prayer, fraternity, and intentional living.
Tiers of Discernment
Our tiered path meets men where they are and gives clear guideposts for growth. Each man selects a tier with his spiritual director and the house director. A formation plan is approved by the vocations director; any changes require approval.
Build universal habits of mature Christian life: responsibility, intentionality, and confidence. Grow alongside brothers who challenge you to become the man God is calling you to be.
Deepen focus on the priestly call. Begin demonstrating competence in the four pillars of formation: Human, Spiritual, Intellectual, and Pastoral. Learn to say “no” to lesser desires to say a wholehearted “yes” to the Lord.
Live a seminarian’s rhythm before you arrive. Embrace rigorous prayer, study, work, and service to strengthen the capacity needed to serve a parish for a lifetime.
Accompaniment in the Spirit of the Church
Discerners are guided at every step by the Vocations Director and Assistant Vocations Directors, who walk closely with them through spiritual direction, pastoral care, and ongoing formation. The House is designed to be a place where men are supported, nourished, and uplifted during this essential stage of vocational discovery.
Through regular mentorship and intentional spiritual accompaniment, discerners learn to recognize the movements of the Holy Spirit and respond with peace, maturity, and freedom.
Life in Community
Discerners live together on-site at the St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center, sharing a common Rule of Life that fosters stability, discipline, and openness to grace.
Daily community practices include:
- Praying the Liturgy of the Hours together
- Eucharistic Adoration
- Shared meals and fraternity
- Personal prayer and spiritual reading
- Regular formation sessions
Living under one roof invites each man to grow not only in virtue and self-knowledge, but also in the gifts of patience, humility, charity, and joyful service.

Rooted in Parish Life
The House of Discernment is not a place apart from parish life—but a community at the heart of it.
Discerners serve the Newman Center through:
- Assisting at Mass, Adoration, and other liturgies
- Teaching classes
- Participating in ministries
- Singing in the parish choir
- Offering hospitality to students and parishioners
- Cultivating a visible and prayerful presence on campus
By immersing themselves in the rhythm of parish life, discerners learn to love the Church as she truly is and to embrace the pastoral charity essential to every vocation.
A Community Listening for God
Above all, the House of Discernment is a home where young men can ask the deepest questions of the heart:
Lord, how are You calling me to love? How are You asking me to serve?
Through prayer, fraternity, service, and guidance, the House creates the space needed for these questions to be asked—and for God’s answers to be heard.
